French Government To Support 4,000 New Marina Spaces

by Nick 26. August 2011 14:37

France’s Ministry of Ecology will this year support nine marina projects to create a further 4,000 marina berths. Nine French marinas have been chosen this year to benefit from the support of the French government so far worth €1.7m.

The nine marina projects were chosen from the Ports de Plaisance Exemplaires (Exemplary Marinas) project, which is organised in conjunction with French marine associations Fédération des Industries Nautiques (FIN) and Voies Navigables de France (VNF). Both web site are in French and English.

Launched in 2009 and now in its third year, the Ports de Plaisance Exemplaires project selects marinas from a list of submissions to receive government support with the goal of the creation of new marina spaces alongside the sustainable development of land.

In 2011, a total of 25 submissions were made. Nine projects were chosen as ‘exemplary’, representing marinas both on the coast and on inland waters from across France. The French government has so far spent €1.7m on studies in support of the project.

Through the winners of the 2009 and 2010 editions of the project, a total of 9,000 berths will be created. The 2011 edition brings the total new berths planned under the project to 13,000.

France currently has 466 marinas and a capacity of more than 170,000 berths in maritime waters, but with five million boaters there is a shortage of boat spaces in the country.

New Marina Completed In Albany, Australia

by Nick 18. July 2011 19:08

Ambitious cruising sailors who want to attempt the difficult task of circumnavigating Australia will have a new safe place of rest in the Great Australian Bight with the opening of a new marina in Albany.

The very modern 74-slip marina in Albany is part of a new AUS$42m waterfront development, and it is the culmination of a thirty year old dream among the residents and would-be developers of the remote West Australian town.

Part of the original jetty system has been retained and this will be the arrival place for visiting yachts until a pen can be found. A service jetty is included for fuel and water and shower and laundry facilities are completed.

The chart datum will be about four metres so this should provide for all but the largest maxi yachts to enter the Marina.

The Marina lays right at the entrance to Albany’s shopping precinct meaning easy access for stores, fine restaurants, clothing shops and pubs. The Marina location also boasts a wonderful Entertainment Centre.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell told NineMSN.com that the number of berths could be increased by 56 as demand by boaters increase.

'These state-of-the-art facilities and pens provide a protected, safe anchorage for the boating community and a base for Albany's important tourist boat operators,' said Buswell. The project also includes fueling facilities and a public launch ramp.

Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls told NineMSN.com that the state government worked with local stakeholders to complete the project.

'This collaboration has produced a world-class result with the waterfront development now having the capacity to cater for commercial, retail and tourist investment,' Grylls said.

For more information about the marina, go to the Albany Waterfront Marina, or the WA Government's website

World Marine Guide will be adding this marina to our list of Western Australian Marinas

Adventurers Arrive At The Arctic Circle After 6-day Adventure

by Nick 4. July 2011 17:32

World Marine Guide have been following a team of adventurers who became the first people to travel from Scotland to the Arctic Circle over six days in six metre RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats) last night (July 3).

Seven men and one woman made the journey as part of the GORE-TEX® Arctic Challenge, battling rough seas and a 10-hour, 220 mile night crossing from marinas in Shetland to Maloy to complete the adventure.

The team, which took on the mammoth task in a bid to prove the capabilities of modern RIBs, arrived in Svolvaer in the Lofoten Islands at 8pm on Sunday, having traveled 903 miles on water.

Pete Goss MBE, one of the crew members, said: “This has been a great trip where I have learned exactly what a RIB can do when put to the test. Thanks to a lovely group of people it has been extremely fun and Norway is breathtaking. As we came into Svolvaer we all felt immensely proud of our achievement and I truly hope it inspires others to get out onto the water and explore."

The challenge put the crew to the test, as well as the two 6.3m, Suzuki powered Humber RIBs. On just the second day bad weather meant the longest leg of the journey - a 10 hour crossing from the Shetland Islands to Maloy in Norway - had to be delayed by eight hours and the crew were forced to make the marathon journey through the night.

After just a few hours’ sleep, the next day proved just as tough, with rough seas making for a physically demanding run from Maloy to Ramsay.

Highlights for the mixed experience team included swimming in the middle of Norwegian sea at night, 100 miles offshore, surrounded by oil rigs while Julian Hutson-Saxby played a specially selected guitar while bobbing in the water. The team had the freedom to explore, swim and jump in and out of the sea thanks to being kitted out in state of the art Musto HPX dry suits with GORE-TEX® technology.

The GORE-TEX® Arctic Challenge was a unique project in that the crew was comprised of professional and highly-experienced offshore adventurers such as Paul Lemmer, Pete Goss MBE, Hugo Montgomery-Swan and Mark Beeley as well as complete novices.

Telegraph journalist, Bryony Gordon, was the only female member of the team and until the training for the challenge, had never done anything like it before.

She said: “I thought it would be terrifying but I have had the most amazing time and feel amazingly lucky to have been able to take part in it. I think I've done London girls proud.”

Organiser, Hugo Montgomery-Swan, who came up for the idea for the adventure, said that it was so successful he was already planning the next.

He said: “Our experiences on the GORE-TEX® Arctic Challenge have been amongst some of the finest I have ever enjoyed afloat. The Norwegian coastline all the way up the west coast is more majestic than one can imagine and our little boats provided the very best possible means of seeing the mountains and all they hold. This is a voyage that will not be forgotten. There are more adventures on the horizon and World Marine Guide will keep an eye on www.ribstothelimit.com to see what the team has planned for 2012.”

by Nick 25. May 2011 19:52

Press Release – May 23, 2011 – Continuing its effort to provide the highest level of service and convenience to their worldwide marina clientele, IGY, Island Global Yachting has announced significant mega yacht expansion plans at the Newport Yacht Club & Marina. The expansion will substantially increase the number of berths available to mega yachts (vessels over 80 ft).

The Newport Yacht Club and Marina expansion will allow more people to visit the marina and enjoy all that it has to offer and its convenient access to New York City. Construction is scheduled to be completed in Q4 2011 and current customers of the marina will not be affected.

The owner of the marina, Newport Associates Development Company applauds IGY’s expansion of the marina.  IGY ‘s  stewardship of the marina has brought change, innovation and growth to the already prosperous property.
