The 5 Most Exclusive Marinas To Visit On A Superyacht

MonRendezjb-2095_pano Superyachts are the playthings of the rich and many yachts are now heading back from the Caribbean for the Mediterranean charter season. But, where is the place for you and your superyacht to see and be seen?

Boat International has identified five of the most chic and most expensive marinas to moor up and bump bows with the best of them.

The luxury market is continuously exploring new ways to help the super rich spend their money. The sea still remains a prime spot, allowing its explorers exclusive time off in the private surrounds of a superyacht, but owning a superyacht means not only initial capital outlay – often into tens, and sometimes hundreds, of millions – but also annual running costs that stretch well into seven figures. A large part of those costs are incurred by mooring fees – after all, a yacht has to be berthed somewhere. To moor in one of the world’s most expensive marinas during high season, a superyacht owner can be expected to pay up to $4,130 per night, and during prime time events such as the Monaco Grand Prix rates can skyrocket to $100,000 or more for a five-day stay in Monaco’s prime berths. Here is our list of the five most expensive, and most desirable, places to park one’s megayacht.

Marina di Capri, Italy

You can expect to pay around $4,000 per night in high season for a place to dock in this Italian marina. Capri has been a favorite with the rich and famous for many years now. In the 1950s, the likes of Clark Gable, Sofia Loren and Jackie Kennedy would congregate on the this island. Today, it is not unusual to see both Rising Sun (8th largest yacht in the world) and Pelorus (20th in the Top 100 Largest Superyachts), both owned by media mogul David Geffen, floating out at anchor. A-list celebrities such as George Clooney, Beyoncé and Jay Z are also often seen exploring the tiny island, or gracing one of its super excusive nightclubs.

Marina di Portofino, Italy

High season prices skyrocket up to $3,335 per night for a mooring in this exclusive marina. Portofino was once a small fishing village and has only one road in and out, which incidentally is usually closed, allowing the area to remain unspoiled. Arguably one of the prettiest harbours out there, Marina di Portofino is where only the wealthiest can afford. It has only 14 berths maximizing the privacy and therefore the exclusivity of the marina. If you get a spot, expect to mingle with the likes of Steven Spielberg (owner of the yacht Seven Seas), Coldplay front man Chris Martin and pop singer Rihanna. It is also a favorite spot for Russian billionaire AndreyMelnichenko, owner of the 119 metre Philippe Starck-designed superyacht A.

 Porto Cervo, Sardinia

To moor your 50-metre-plus superyacht in this super luxe port it is going to set you back up to $3,100 a night in high season – and why not, seeing that back in 1959 Prince Karim Aga Khan carved out this village as a private retreat for his wealthy friends and family. Today, it is a little different from HRH the Aga Khan’s original dream. The “village” today is made up of high-end boutiques, and designer nightspots including the nearby infamous Billionaire nightclub. The world’s largest superyachts are often seen gracing the surrounding seas too, including the 110 metre Dilbar, and Serene, the world’s ninth largest yacht. It was in this very town a few years back that George Clooney was refused entry into one of the exclusive nightspots.

Port de Saint-Tropez, Cote d'Azur

Saint Tropez in the south of France has long been associated with the rich and famous. Originally made famous by Bridget Bardot in the 1950s, this French Riviera town still holds the heart of jet-setters, models and celebrities alike. The town has largely kept its quaint charm with its narrow streets. The marina doesn’t actually allow superyachts over 70 metres, instructing them to drop anchor out of port.  Bernard Arnault’s superyacht Amadeus is often seen floating off France’s Côte d’Azur, along with the iconic 88 metre Maltese Falcon, originally built by US venture capitalist Tom Perkins and now owned by Elena Ambrosiadou. Hotel million-heiress Paris Hilton is another fan of Saint Tropez and can be found sampling the delights of La Voile Rouge – one of the most expensive beach clubs in town.

Ibiza Magna, Balearics

This marina is often referred to as one for the young, rich and trendy. Ibiza Magna is located minutes away from the island’s casino strip and infamous nightclub Pacha – renowned for it’s extortionate bar prices and all-night parties.

For those with yachts below 60 metres be prepared to pay up to $3,660, and for superyachts over this length, once again the preference is to drop anchor outside of the main port. The Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal’s yacht has been seen out at anchor here, along with arguably the most famous yacht in the world – and the current largest yacht on the planet – Eclipse, owned by Roman Abramovich.

In Ibiza, superyacht billionaires mingle with the stars like Jade Jagger and Kate Moss who either own or regularly rent villas on the island.

For most superyacht owners or megayacht charterers, you could say that these pricey mooring fees are nothing but a drop in the ocean, but it’s not only the very rich and very famous who get to enjoy superyachts and megayachts in these exclusive locations – you can too, if you have the wherewithal to charter one of these magnificent vessels. Even the very largest can be available for a once in a lifetime holiday of unparalleled luxury.  Speak to Jack Tar about Superyacht Charter

Charter An Exploration Yacht To Get Off The Beaten Track

by Nick 16. March 2013 13:51

There are many great destinations for a yacht charter but sometimes you just want to get away from the crowd, experience a new neighbourhood or put a bit of excitement back into your life. Chartering a exploration yacht allows you to do just this and visit some of the more far flung shores of the world.

As the name suggests these yachts are designed to stray off the beaten track. Some are ice strengthened and can cope with freezing temperatures not just for the guests but for the vessel as well. A few are built with very shallow drafts to allow the vessel to approach the shore closer, venture up rivers or just visit marinas that are not accessible to most superyachts. Some are even built to cope with anything, but almost all are capable of being independent for long periods. Some are converted Naval vessels or ex oil industry supply boats such as the Artic P pictured below.

The Arctic P was built in 1969 in Bremerhaven, Germany, as an ice-classed, oceangoing tug for the Bugsier Towing & Salvage Company. Her length of 87.58m made her Germany’s largest tug. She was converted into a yacht for the late media baron and casino owner Kerry Packer.

Self-sufficient adventure is perhaps the greatest appeal of the luxury exploration boat, that by their very nature, are inevitably powerful and rugged superyachts on the outside, so they can get the job done safely and efficiently with interiors are usually opulent, stylish and very well equipped.

Record Attendance For The 22nd Monaco Yacht Show

by Nick 13. October 2012 00:34

From 19 to 22 September 33,000 luxury yachting companies, yacht owners, wealthy customers and representatives of future purchasers converged at the  Monaco boat show to meet up at the yacht show's 500 stands and aboard the hundred-odd superyachts on show. At last year's show there were signs of an upswing in the market. MYS 2012 confirmed the trend; slowly but surely, business is picking up.

With yacht prices that have fallen significantly in the past four years and a wider choice, luxury yachting was already clearly a buyer's market, benefiting affluent customers provided they decide to buy quickly. In this competitive situation brokers and shipyards brought out their best selection of superyachts for the four days of the Monaco show: 103 superyachts of an average 46.70m length, including six mega-yachts of more than 70m and 38 brand new 2012 models.

Again this year the showcase spread along the Port Hercule marina quayside. Offshore 120 superyachts were at anchor, directly linked by tenders to the exhibitors on the docks. The constant to and fro of tenders showed that rendezvous diaries with potential buyers were full......

2012 Antigua Charter Yacht Show

by Nick 6. October 2012 17:49

With many of the world’s biggest and most luxurious chartered yachts heading over to the Caribbean for the winter season, now seems like the appropriate time to write about chartering a yacht from the beautiful island of Antigua. Antigua is one of the most beautiful island getaways in the Caribbean, and a favorite sailing charter destination. It is particularly popular with those who wish to go snorkeling and scuba diving on the coral reefs.

View marinas in Antigua with World Marine Guide. A guide to marine services aroubd the world.

The main Caribbean charter season runs from early November through to June/July, with the high season from around mid-December to March. This is the period in which those wishing to escape the cold temperatures of North America and Europe arrive in huge numbers. A large proportion of the islands revenue is made during this time through tourism. A guide to marine services aroubd the world.

English Harbour (and the neighbouring port of Falmouth) has gained international recognition as one of the best yachting and sailing destinations in the Caribbean. Situated on the southern coast of the island, these ports are mostly sheltered from the violent storms and hurricanes which can hit the island between July and late October. The area gets its name from the harbour in which the Royal Navy established its base of operations during the eighteenth century. It is also home to the Nelson’s Dockyard cultural heritage site, named after Admiral Nelson (who lived in the Dockyard from 1784 to 1787).

One of the most important upcoming events is the 51st Antigua Charter Yacht Show, which will take place in the first week of December from the 2nd to the 8th. The yachts on show at this event range in length from 46 feet to 245 feet and are berthed in the three marinas mentioned above. The basic premise of the show is to gather Yachts that have come to the Caribbean for the winter yachting season in order to allow charter agents to view exactly what is on offer. This includes meeting with captains and crews and sampling the delicacies provided by the many talented chefs. Many of the chefs will have the opportunity to participate in the 13th anual “Concours de Chef”. The theme for this years competition is the Healthy Dinner Challenge. Chefs must create a 3-course menu which promotes healthy eating with “great tasting local Caribbean cuisine and simplicity in preparation.”

The success of the island as a charter destination is hardly a surprise. The local yacht workers are known for being extremely and helpful, while there are many small businesses which cater to all yachting requirements.  The historical ambiance of the Dockyard and the friendly locals are also crucial factors.

The World's Five Largest Charter Yachts

by Nick 9. September 2012 17:48

Owning a huge yacht can be very expensive, even by the standards of their billionaire and centa-millionaire owners—and are perhaps the best case for "Rent, Don't Buy"—but, like the relatively plebeian Florida condo, they can be rented out to defray the cost of maintenance. With price tags north of $100M, the five largest yachts available for charter aren't going to come cheap, even when rented by the week.

The Nero, above, is a 296-foot yacht that spends summers cruising the Mediterranean and winters in the Caribbean, is available for $531K per week in high seasons. It might only be the world's fifth largest charter yacht, but Nero has space for 12 guests in opulent staterooms, a crew of 21, a swimming pool, a gym, a jacuzzi, and four jet skis for in-port fun. Charter Nero from Burgess Yachts.

The fourth-largest charter yacht in the world, the 311-foot Indian Empress, is currently owned by billionaire Indian industrialist Vijay Mallya, but was originally built in 2000 for the prolific spenders in the Qatari royal family. Available for weekly charter in the Mediterranean for an astounding $759K per week, the Indian Empress boasts 16 staterooms (though only 12 guests are permitted at a time), 30 crew members, six Jet Skis, scuba gear for 12, and a full gym. Charter Indian Empress 1-800-SailAway.

Perhaps the most storied motor yacht of all time, the Christina O once belonged to shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, who entertained movie stars and dignitaries on the 325-foot converted Canadian naval ship. Today, the yacht, which fell into disrepair while under the ownership of the Greek government, has been totally renovated by a family friend of the Onassis family. It is available for charter by the day and the week, charging $575K per week for up to 30 guests. You can charter Christina O  with Moody Yachts.

Somewhere between the 325-foot Christina O and this ship's 385-feet, the line between yacht and cruise ship has been crossed. Based in Greece, the Turama costs some $114K per day, that's a jaw-dropping $798K per week. Of course, that massive cost means securing plenty of ship for a luxe corporate retreat, with space for 70 guests in 43 staterooms. The clunky lines of this yacht might not be too romantic, but corporate retreats shouldn't be about romance anyway. Turama, Navis Yacht Charter, is available for chartering.

And now, for the largest charter yacht available on the planet: the 400-foot Alexander. The blue-hulled ship is based in Greece and charges $797K per week. For that, the renters get space for 80 guests in 40 cabins, an elaborate bar, a swimming pool, helipad, and some seriously 80s decor. The fact that the yacht is woefully in need of a refit obviously hasn't lowered the price. Alexander can be chartered with Superyachts.
