Mylor Yacht Club Design Approved, Cornwall, UK

by nick 31. July 2010 15:28

Planning approval has been granted for the brand new Mylor Yacht Club building which will cost £1,000,000.

Located in Cornwall at the entrance to Mylor Creek, Mylor Yacht Harbour marina offers a modern and spacious marina with 400 spaces afloat on finger berths and swinging moorings. But with over 600 members, the local club was desperate for a new premises. details of Mylor Yacht Harbour Marina can be found on www.worldmarineguide.com

Archial Architects Director Ian Hodder said, "Given the location of the Club alongside a Grade I listed 12th Century church and a couple of Grade II listed Admiralty buildings, our design brief was to create a building that complemented rather than threatened those buildings of historical interest in the immediate vicinity."

The architects have created a first floor structure that is much smaller than the ground floor but expanded the open terrace that enjoys panoramic views over the harbour.

Work begins in September and the building should be finished by Easter, when it will be used as an Olympic Training Camp for Great Britain and other visiting teams to the 2012 Olympic Games

Pasito Blanco Marina, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain

by nick 31. July 2010 14:03

Pasito Blanco marina is a rather isolated marina for the tourist resort of Maspalomas which is about 3km away. Although there is some residential development around the harbour, facilities are few. The marina is run by El Club de Yates de Pasito Blanco and is a private concern. Visiting yachts are made welcome though. Because of the excellent security this would be a good place to leave a yacht unattended for long periods.

If contemplating a long stay here a hire car would be essential, though there is a frequent bus service, every half hour, which runs along the coast of Gran Canaria to the larger neighbouring villages and towns. Cars are not allowed into the village unless possessing a pass.

There is a small but good supermarket close to the marina but for anything else not stocked here it would be necessary to make a trip into Maspalomas. Yacht charter can be in Puerto Rico and chartering a yacht to sail around the island is a popular holiday.

Moorings Choose Port Louis Marina, Grenada As Yacht Charter Base

by nick 29. July 2010 18:27

From October 2010 Camper & Nicholsons’ Port Louis Marina will be the base for The Moorings’ luxury charter operation in Grenada. Situated adjacent to the island’s capital, St George’s, and only five miles from the international airport, the marina is perfectly placed for arriving charter guests, and grants immediate access to the breathtaking cruising grounds of Grenada and the Grenadines.

It’s southerly position makes Grenada a year-round destination, and The Moorings will be offering bareboat charters and all-inclusive crewed vacations on a fleet of 11m to 15m (35ft to 51ft) custom-built catamarans and monohulls. Varied itineraries will explore the countless islands and anchorages, sandy beaches and historic sites, and tours of rum distilleries, spice plantations, waterfalls and national parks will pose a rare treat.

Cheryl Powell, The Moorings Chief Operating Officer, remarked, “This new base is a shining example of our dedication to scouting out the world’s best cruising grounds, shore-side surroundings and welcoming cultures for our guests’ enjoyment. They are sure to enjoy the top-notch facilities and service standards for which Camper & Nicholsons are renowned. And Grenada’s natural beauty, both afloat and ashore, make it the perfect yachting destination.”

Port Louis has 160 fully serviced berths with water and electricity, as well as 24 hour security and marina-wide internet access. Facilities ashore include washrooms and laundry, a bar, restaurant and pool. More information on Port Louis Marina can be found on www.worldmarineguide.com

James Beaver, Operations Director of Camper & Nicholsons Marinas, said, “We’re delighted to have been selected by The Moorings as their southern Caribbean base. The momentum has been building in Port Louis since we first opened some 18 months ago, and we already have sailmakers, provisioners, tour operators and other businesses operating out of the marina. But this shows the potential for Grenada as an international yachting destination, now that the right facilities are in place. The Moorings and their guests are known for their demanding standards, and we will work hard to make sure we surpass their expectations.”

New Company WIDER To Build Expanding Boat

by nick 29. July 2010 12:45

A new yacht design which can almost double its usable deck space is being built by a new company Wider,  who's owner is the Pershing founder and former president Tilli Antonelli. .

The yacht is is 42 feet in length and the boat's big selling point is that is can expand, with the sides folding out to double the usable surface area the boat to around 15 sqm. Two more models are in the pipeline, at 35ft and 50ft

It will be powered by twin 370hp Arneson surface drives, which should pushproduce a speed ofaround 40 knots.

The hull is being constructed using vacuum infusion in a bid to make the Wider 42 as light as possible. The accommodation in the forward sections of the boat will be comprised of a kitchenette, seating that drops into a double berth and a head with a large, separate shower. No prices have been announced yet.

The stern of the Wider 42 can house a jet ski or rubber dinghy, or even a diving centre, in an uncovered garage. The housing for the personal watercraft lowers, forming a slide to facilitate haulage and launch operations. Once the water toys have been removed, this space can be converted into an additional sundeck.

You just have to hope that you dont accidently hit the expand button when you are in a narrow finger berth in a marina!

Spanish Government Introduces Temporary Sailing Permit

by nick 28. July 2010 18:56

The Spanish government has introduced a new temporary sailing permit that allows boatbuilders, importers, distributors and dealers the possibility to sail leisure craft to shows, exhibitions, marinas and sea trials with prospective customers, prior to matriculation.

In addition to crew, a maximum number of three guests are allowed on board for demonstration passages only. The temporary permit is valid for a maximum period of six months after which it has to be renewed if needed.

The permit can be obtained by submitting a completed form together with the vessel's identification number, copy of the declaration of conformity or CE mark of the vessel and its engine, and a declaration stating that the boat is fitted with adequate navigation and radio communications instruments as well as fire-fighting, safety and rescue equipment.

Liability insurance is also a prerequisite. Within two weeks the vessel is allocated a plate number that coincides with its identification number. This has to be displayed on the hull.

The scheme has now been law since its official publishing on June 19. The full text can be downloaded at http://www.boe.es/boe/dias/2010/06/19/pdfs/BOE-A-2010-9713.pdf.

by nick 28. July 2010 17:59

A new 300-berth marina in Alderney could  begin to be built as soon as spring 2011 if a developer can be found.

The new marina at Braye Harbour will also include in the plans the possibility of taking future ferries from the UK. The States of Alderney has started its search for a partner to design, build, finance and operate. It is anticipated that current operations in the harbour will not be disrupted during the construction of the marina.

Tenders have gone out and any expressions of interest need to be put to the States before the end of August.
